Psychological assessment
Aptitude and career assessment
Structured aptitude and vocational testing for a student choosing a subject or a degree, and for an adult considering a change — administered by a qualified clinical psychologist and written up as a report. In clinic in PECHS and DHA, Karachi.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, this page is not the right place. Here is what to do →
What it measures
An aptitude assessment measures what a person is actually good at — reasoning with words, with numbers, with space and pattern, with detail — using internationally validated instruments rather than an opinion about what they seem suited to. It is administered one-to-one by a qualified clinical psychologist and written up as a report.
Vocational assessment
Vocational assessment sits alongside it and asks a different question: not only what someone is able to do, but what kind of work they are drawn to, what conditions they do their best work in, and where those two lines meet. Aptitude on its own tells you what a person can do. Interest on its own tells you what they think they want. The report is written around the overlap, because that is where a durable decision usually sits.
Most people arrive at it at a fork. A student choosing subjects, or a degree, with a family that already has a view. A young adult a year into a programme that is plainly not working. Someone mid-career who is capable, competent and has stopped wanting to do it.
What it is notIt is not one of the free personality quizzes that returns a job title, and it is not a test you can pass or fail. It does not tell you what to do with your life and it will not settle a disagreement at home by producing an answer with a clinic's letterhead on it. It is also not a placement service — PHC does not find anyone a university place or a job. What it produces is a structured, evidenced description of ability and interest, and a conversation about what that means for the decision in front of you.
What happens, step by step
PHC is an assessment-first practice, and that applies here as much as anywhere clinical.
- An initial session. We ask what the decision actually is, who is involved in it, what has been tried and what is driving the timing. Bring academic results if the question is a subject or a degree. Nothing is administered before this conversation.
- A decision about what is warranted.Whether aptitude testing, vocational testing or both are indicated — and whether what is in the way is really the decision at all. Sometimes it is not. Where the initial session finds that the block is anxiety, low mood or pressure at home, we will say so. You will not be given tests you do not need.
- Administration, in person, by a qualified clinical psychologist.Structured, timed ability tasks and structured interest and preference measures. Assessment sessions run about two hours for a child and about three hours for an adult. Where sessions are held daily an assessment is usually finished in about a week; more often it takes two to three weeks, and we do not recommend stretching it past three — the length depends on what the initial session found was warranted, and you are told before you come.
- A written report. What was administered, the profile of strengths across the areas tested, where interest and ability align, and what those two together point towards — in ordinary language, so a student and a parent can read the same document. The report is with you in two to three weeks, depending on how complex the case is. The tests are scored and interpreted, the report is written, and Prof. Dr. Tahira Yousaf reviews and approves it before it is handed over.
- A conversation about what follows.A profile is not a decision. Where the next step is working through the choice itself, rather than measuring anything further, the route is career counselling at PHC.
Who it is for, and who it is not for
School and college students choosing subjects or a degree, university students reconsidering a course, and adults considering a change. Parents very often attend the first conversation, and that is welcome.
It is not for a family that wants a document to settle an argument with. We will describe what the testing found, including where it does not support what anyone in the room was hoping for, and the person assessed is the person the report is written for.
It is also not the right starting point if what is actually happening is that someone cannot get out of bed, is dreading every morning, or has stopped being able to decide anything at all. That is a different conversation and we would rather have that one first.

What it is used to answer
None — and that is the honest answer rather than a gap. This is the one assessment on this site that is usually not about a condition at all: most people who take it are managing perfectly well and are facing a decision. No condition page routes here, and none is claimed.
Where a difficulty is sitting underneath the decision — exam pressure, low mood, a family conflict about the choice — the initial session is what identifies it, and the route from there is the relevant condition page or emotional assessment and symptom screening. See every condition we work with.
Who administers it
Every psychologist on PHC's panel is qualified to carry out assessments. Most assessment work is done by the three permanent psychologists — Samrah Abdul Rafey, Hassaan Ahmed Pasha and Nabiha Rasheed.
Every psychologist at PHC holds a minimum postgraduate qualification in clinical psychology and completed over 800 supervised clinical hours before joining. Assignment is based on speciality, your presenting needs and clinical fit — never on who happens to be free — and who administers your assessment is decided at the initial session.
Questions people ask first
Will it tell my child what career to choose?
No, and be wary of anything that says it will. It produces a profile — what this person is strong at, what they are drawn to, and where those overlap — and then a conversation about what that means for the specific decision in front of them. The decision stays theirs. What changes is that it is made on evidence instead of on a guess.
Can this be done online?
The initial session and the feedback conversation can be, across Pakistan and internationally. The aptitude testing is timed and standardised and has to be administered in person. We will tell you which parts apply to you at the point of booking.
Is there an age limit?
No fixed one. Most people assessed are students from secondary school upwards, and adults are assessed too. If you are asking on behalf of a much younger child, the more useful route is usually a learning and achievement assessment, and we will say so.
What is in the report, and who else sees it?
What was administered, the profile across the areas tested, where interest and ability align, and what that points towards. It belongs to the person assessed — or to the parent, where they are a child — and it is not sent to a school, a university or an employer without your say-so.
What does it cost, and how long does it take?
Assessment sessions run about two hours for a child and about three hours for an adult. Where sessions are held daily an assessment is usually finished in about a week; more often it takes two to three weeks, and we do not recommend stretching it past three. Fees vary by psychologist and by service, and the length depends on which instruments the initial session found were warranted. You send us six details, we come back with a psychologist, a time and a fee, and you decide. How fees and booking work.
Confidentiality, session length and choosing your psychologist are answered in full in questions people ask before booking.
Where testing happens
Speaking to someone starts here
PHC is appointment-only. Message or call and a real person answers — Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm PKT.
Not sure whether this is us? Contact us anyway. We will tell you directly whether we can help, and refer you elsewhere if we cannot.
Six details, and we can match you
- Name of the person who will attend
- Their age
- What is going on, in your own words
- Whether you would prefer a male or female psychologist
- Online, or in clinic in Karachi
- Whether the person attending is a minor or elderly
If someone else is paying, we will also ask for guardian or payer details. A slot is held once the booking payment is received — half the fee, at least 24 hours ahead.
