Books by Prof. Dr. Tahira Yousaf
Two books written for people outside the consulting room, from the founder of the Psychological Help Centre, Karachi. Available on Amazon Kindle and in print at the clinic.
Books written to be used
Most books about mental health are written for other clinicians, or they are written to sell a single idea. These two are written for the person in the chair — someone who has been meaning to do something about how they have been feeling, and who is not going to read a textbook to get there.
Both draw on over twenty years of clinical practice in Karachi and on the same evidence-based approach PHC works by: cognitive behavioural therapy, described plainly, with something to actually do on the page rather than a set of conclusions to agree with.
A book is not therapy, and neither of these pretends to be. Reading one does not make anyone your psychologist, and neither book can tell you what is going on for you — only a qualified clinician can do that, in person. What a workbook can do is give you somewhere to start, or something to work with between sessions. If you find while reading that you would rather talk to someone, that is a reasonable outcome and we would rather you did. Speak to a psychologist at PHC.
Path to Peace: A Workbook for Healing with CBT
A working book rather than a reading book. It sets out practical, evidence-based cognitive behavioural exercises for anxiety, low mood and self-esteem — three of the things people most often arrive at a clinic holding — drawn from over twenty years of clinical practice.
The Trust Fall
A book about trust — how it is lost, what it costs to live without it, and what emotional recovery from that involves. Written for a general reader rather than for clinicians.
Find it on Dr Tahira's Amazon author page.
