Stress and anger management

Structured sessions for individuals and for employees, for anger that is costing you something and stress that has stopped being temporary — in clinic in PECHS and DHA, or online.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, this page is not the right place. Here is what to do.

What this is

Stress and anger management is structured work on two things that arrive in the body before they arrive in words, and that most people first notice by their cost rather than by their cause.

The work has a shape. Early sessions map what is actually happening — the situations, the point at which it turns, what happens in the twenty seconds before, and what it has already cost in relationships, at work or in your health. That mapping is usually the first surprise: people arrive able to describe the incident and unable to describe the build-up, and the build-up is where anything can be done.

From there the sessions work on specifics. Recognising the build-up earlier than you currently do. Having something to do at that point other than what you do now. Saying the thing that needs saying before it has compressed into something else — because a great deal of anger is a delayed bill for something that was never said. Where stress is the presentation rather than anger, the same structure applies to load, recovery and the things that have quietly stopped being optional.

Two things this page will not do. It will not tell you that anger is the problem — sometimes anger is a reasonable response to a situation that needs changing, and a psychologist who treats every instance of it as a fault is not helping. And it will not promise you a temperament. The work is on what you do with it, which is the part that is actually available to be worked on.

What it is not: it is not a court-mandated or certified programme, and PHC does not issue certificates of completion for legal or disciplinary purposes. It is not a one-session technique handout. And it is not something you are given before anyone has worked out what is going on — anger and stress are both presentations that can sit on top of something else, which is why an initial session comes first.

How it works at PHC

PHC is an assessment-first practice. Nobody begins this work here because they asked for it by name — they begin it because an initial session found it was what the situation called for.

  1. An initial session. We ask what has been going on, for how long, and what it is costing you. Nothing is administered before this conversation. Where the picture needs more than a conversation, emotional assessment and symptom screening decides which further tests, if any, are clinically warranted.
  2. A psychologist matched to what that found.Psychologists at PHC are not assigned on availability. Assignment is based on speciality, your presenting needs and clinical fit. Preferred psychologist gender is one of the six details we ask for when you book. If the fit is not right, tell us and we will move you to someone else.
  3. 50-minute sessions, in clinic or online.A standard session is 50 minutes. There is work between sessions — noticing, recording, trying something once in a situation where you would normally not have an option — because that is where the change is tested rather than described. If a session runs beyond 50 minutes and your psychologist has the time, you can extend by an hour at an extra fee, and you are told what that is beforehand. Minor overruns of one to five minutes are not charged.
  4. Progress reviewed, not assumed. What you are working on is revisited at intervals rather than taken on trust — what has changed, what has not, and what should be done differently. Where thought patterns are carrying most of it, CBT may be the therapy used; where the difficulty is the speed and size of the feeling itself, DBT skills may come first; where it sits in a relationship, marriage and couples counselling may be proposed alongside.

For employers. PHC delivers stress management and mental health support for staff as part of its work with organisations, including teacher support inside schools. Employee sessions follow the same clinical standards as any other; an employer does not receive a clinical record of what an employee discusses.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

At PHC, this work is used with adolescents and adults. For younger children, anger and aggression are worked with through play therapy and behavioural approaches rather than through structured sessions of this kind, with the parents closely involved.

It is not the right service for everything. Where screening points to a picture needing psychiatric input, where anger is part of a wider presentation that needs treating in its own right, or where someone is being harmed, you will be told that plainly rather than enrolled in something. If anyone in your household is at risk, here is what to do.

Conditions we use this for

Each of these has a page of its own explaining what PHC does about it. Which route applies to you is decided at the initial session.

These are the two condition pages on this site that name stress and anger management as a route that may be indicated. See every condition we work with.

Who delivers it

No psychologist's supplied profile names stress and anger management as a modality they practise, so this page does not print a name. That is deliberate. Every clinician card on this site is drawn from what that clinician wrote about themselves, and we will not manufacture one.

What is true of the whole team: every psychologist at PHC holds a minimum postgraduate qualification in clinical psychology and completed over 800 supervised clinical hours before joining. Who you would see is decided at the initial session, matched on speciality, presenting needs and clinical fit — and some of our psychologists do name anger, aggression and stress among the areas they work with, which you can read on their own profiles and on the two condition pages above.

Questions people ask first

Someone has told me I need anger management. Does that mean something is wrong with me?

No. Being told that usually means the effect on someone else has become visible, which is worth taking seriously and is not the same as a diagnosis. What is going on, and whether this is the right route, is what an initial session establishes.

Will I be given a certificate?

PHC does not issue certificates of completion for court, employment or disciplinary purposes. If you have been asked to produce one, tell us at the point of enquiry so we can be straight with you about what we can and cannot provide before you book.

Can my employer arrange this for staff?

Yes. PHC works with organisations on stress management and staff mental health support. What an employee discusses stays between them and their psychologist — an employer does not receive a clinical record of it, and it is worth both sides being clear about that at the outset.

My anger is only at home. Is that still this?

Anger that appears in one setting and not another is common and it is information rather than an exception. Whether the route is individual work, couples work or family work is a question the initial session answers.

Speaking to someone starts here

PHC is appointment-only. Message or call and a real person answers — Monday to Saturday, 10am to 8pm PKT.

Six details, and we can match you

  • Name of the person who will attend
  • Their age
  • What is going on, in your own words
  • Whether you would prefer a male or female psychologist
  • Online, or in clinic in Karachi
  • Whether the person attending is a minor or elderly

If someone else is paying, we will also ask for guardian or payer details. A slot is held once the booking payment is received — half the fee, at least 24 hours ahead.
